Presentation:
Subject - Lies, Damned Lies & Specifications
Speaker - Jonathon Novick, Director of Sales at Audio Precision, Inc.
Specs are important. Every product has them. Much time and money are spent on measuring them. Many purchase decisions are based on them. And, yet many will dismiss them.
1) Which spec tells you how the product sounds?
2) Is 10 % THD excessive or barely noticeable?
3) Why do some bad products have good specs and vice versa?
4) Why don’t we measure audio products with music as the stimulus?
5) Why are the datasheets for finished audio products so short?
Over zealous marketing in the 60’s and 70’s led to such inflated specs that the FTC had to step in. Thirty five years later, confusion reigns again but the FTC isn’t stepping in. Consumer fraud still exists but that’s not the whole issue. Specs are often misinterpreted. Broad assumptions are made based on the performance characteristics of a device based on a single point measurement. Without an accurate understanding of the specs, it becomes easy to understand that standard measurements do not reflect real world listening.
This presentation will include live listening tests so that real world performance can be compared to measured specifications.
